BELLARY, OCT. 03: Heavy rains that battered most of northern Karnataka has claimed 74 lives, destroyed over 26,000 houses and washed away Pothnal bridge, cutting off Raichur town. Director of Diocesan development society, BDDS, Fr Paulraj who is visiting the worst affected places in Raichur district said, “the Pothnal bridge connecting Bellary with Raichur is washed away, cutting off road traffic and disrupting normal life”. “Thousands of houses have been destroyed, casting a pall of gloom over the poverty stricken villages,” Fr Paulraj added. The Bellary diocese has already set up camps for the shelterless and the flood affected persons. Many of the churches, parish houses and school buildings have been damaged by the incessant rains. Karnataka chief minister B S Yeddyurappa, is visiting the affected areas in Bellary and Raichur districts to monitor the situation caused by rain havoc and to provide relief to the affected. Chief Minister Yeddyurappa has announced the immediate release of Rs 100 crore to the deputy commissioners of the affected districts for taking up relief operations and urgent distribution of foodgrains and other essential requirements. It has been reported that the inflow into the Almatti dam has touched 3 lakh cusecs. About 4.5 lakh cusecs of water is being released from the Narayanapura Dam and 1.5 lakh cusecs from Tungabhadra dam. People living in low lying areas and on the banks of rivers have been cautioned about the flash floods which may be caused by the release of eater from the dams.
